Since 2008, Gray Area Foundation for the Arts has been a leader in teaching code to create art. Within our education program we have held over 50 classes and served over 500 artists.

With your support we will offer merit and need-based scholarships to lower barriers of access to digital art + technology; create an online gallery of student work and open-source code created at Gray Area; and increase our class offerings to more students by developing a new platform called creativecode.io

Robert Henke, born in Munich, Germany, builds and operates machines to produce art. Amazed and inspired by the constantly expanding possibilities of applied computer science and technology, Henke explores new territories between musical composition, performance and installation. Alongside diving deeply into aesthetic concepts, the creation of his own instruments and tools is an important and integral part of his artistic process.

His works are concerned with volume, power and impact, the tension between silence and noise, darkness and light, and about the exploration and manipulation of real and virtual spaces. They expose carefully shaped details and gradual changes of repeating structures in different time scales.

Henke is a pioneer of multichannel sound, using methods and systems like wave field synthesis and ambisonics to create situations of total immersion, expanding the sonic experience of his performances beyond of what can be reproduced at home.

During the last decade, Henke’s artistic explorations more and more expanded from his initial focus on music towards the field of installation, both sound based and audio-visual. His installations, internet based audiovisual performances and concerts have been presented at Tate Modern London, the Centre Pompidou Paris, Le Lieu Unique Nantes, PS-1 New York, MUDAM Luxembourg, MAK Vienna and on countless festivals.

Henke’s interest in the combination of art and technology is also evident in his contributions to the development of the music software ‘Ableton Live’. Since Ableton’s founding in 1999, he has been central to the development of Live, which became the standard tool for electronic music production and completely redefined the performance practice of electronic music.

He writes and lectures about sound and the creative use of computers, and holds a professorship in sound design at the Berlin University of Arts.

For 2013 he has been selected as Mohr Visiting Artist at the music department of Stanford University, where he will be teaching a class in computer music composition and performance.

Deadbeat is one Scott Monteith, a long time Montrealer and recent Berlin ex-pat who has been releasing his own special blend of dub laden, minimal electronics since 2000, for labels such as Cynosure, Scape, and Wagon Repair to name but a few. His work has been met with consistent critical acclaim from the industry’s leading publications and websites, and drawn regular performance invitations for some of the world’s most respected festivals, including Barcelona’s Sonar, Berlin’s Transmediale, and Montreal’s own Mutek. From 1999 to late 2003, Scott worked, assuming various roles, for the Montreal based company Applied Acoustics Systems, makers of a range of critically acclaimed software synthesizers. Having now moved on to pursue his own musical efforts full time, the experience left him with a passion for the development of new creative interfaces, and a strong grasp of some the most cutting edge technology in the industry. A certified music technology junkie, his knowledge in such matters has been occasionally called upon at various events, most notably the 2007 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy in Melbourne, Australia, and as a writer for Computer Music Magazine. Whether crafting kaleidoscopic house and techno, snap-clap digital dancehall, or impossibly heavy dub, Scott continues to search for his own unique voice between the ones and zeros.

Neel is most well known for his project with Donato Dozzy, Voices From
The Lake. Their seminal debut album was one of our favorite releases
of 2012, and was named album of the year by Resident Advisor. The live set that VFTL played at our event in July 2012 will go down in history as one of the best sets we’ve ever hosted. With Donato Dozzy taking a break from extensive touring, Neel has really stepped up his touring schedule in the past year and has a few solo releases that will be seeing the light of day very soon. He really held his own on the past VFTL tour and deeply impressed us with his DJ sets. He will undoubtedly come with a record crate full of unreleased tracks to share with us, as both he and Voices From The Lake have been very busy in the studio this year.
The past few years have seen Bryan take his infamous Brooklyn-based party, The Bunker, to Panorama Bar in Berlin, Corsica Studios in London, Unsound Festival in Krakow, Communikey Festival in Boulder, Decibel Festival in Seattle, Smartbar in Chicago, GAFFTA in San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and of course Detroit. The Bunker celebrated it’s tenth anniversary in January 2013.

“I Just Wanna Hold Your Hand” was conceived at UP Festival by artists Tosh Chiang, Melody Donoso , Ellen Keith, Yael Braha, Mark Roth and Jasdeep Garcha, and will be exhibited in it’s full participatory glory in the courtyard of the Phoenix hotel for the duration of the event.

I Just Wanna Hold Your Hand

Conducting energy through people to stimulate tangible public interactions.

By interacting with one another people are able to transform their environment through play. Two metal hands are mounted to the wall. When two or more individuals complete the circuit they provoke audio-visual responses. The level of interactivity is determined by the flow of electricity through the individuals. The interaction can be tailored per installation; the core tool is the Arduino, and in this case we’ve experimented with Processing projections to activate blank city walls. storefronts, or pavement. This design allows for expansion as well as meaningful data collection. Also, we just like making people hold hands.

ArtPadSF at the iconic Phoenix Hotel is a provocative 21st century boutique art fair, focused on emerging and contemporary art from the Bay Area and beyond. In its third year and partnered with San Francisco’s world-renowned arts institutions, galleries, and artists, ArtPadSF is a crossroads for the creative, and an unparalleled marketplace for art. Arts patrons and enthusiasts are invited to take in some of the most exciting contemporary art the market has to offer, as the Phoenix Hotel transforms itself into a visual arts destination with over 40 hotel rooms taken over by galleries and curatorial projects.
Wesley Grubbs is an artist, data visualizer and provocateur based in Berkeley, CA. In 2007 he founded Pitch Interactive, a studio who’s focus is weaving code with design with statistics to find versatile solutions to communicate complex data for clients such as Google, Wired, GE, Esquire, Scientific American, Popular Science and the McKnight Foundation.

Built upon his experiences living abroad, degrees held in International Economics and Information Systems and his innate interest in the brain and cognition, Wes’ work focuses on revealing patterns about human behavior and how our actions impact our surroundings.

Pitch Interactive’s work spans illustrations, physical installations, console game user interfaces, software applications, websites and textiles. Their work has been showcased at the MoMA’s TalkToMe exhibit in in New York, the McKnight Foundation’s 30 year anniversary exhibit, the Foosaner Art Museum’s “The Art of Networks” exhibit, The Max Planck Science Express Train, the Data Flow books and many other internationally acclaimed publications.

Ben McChesney has a eccentric passion for making shiny and fun installations. With the introduction of the Microsoft Kinect sensor his focus shifted from a flash web developer toward Open Frameworks and creating physical experiences. The result of new direction led him to join Helios Interactive, an experience design studio in San Francisco, and spearhead their development team in multi-touch and gesture based installations. He is a recent graduate from Rochester Institute of Technology’s New Media Design and Imaging degree program. In his free time Ben is an amateur economist, musician, and a heck of a dancer. Someday he hopes to use data visualization and open source to make the world a better place.

Last weekend Esri joined forces with Airbnb, the City of San Francisco’s Mayor’s Office of Innovation, and GAFFTA to put on the Discover SF Hackathon. This event brought together designers, developers, and entrepreneurs to hack the urban experience by promoting discovery and exploration for residents and tourists alike.

A sneak peak at GeoTriggers

This was also the first public preview of Esri’s new ArcGIS Geotrigger Service! The API and service connects you with your surroundings so app developers can provide physical context to users.

To help people get up and running, some of lead GeoTrigger developers were on site to hand out special AppIDs, documentation and samples that the teams could use to build a their own trigger-enabled apps.

The Winners

At the end of the event, 12 projects were submitted to the Discover SF Hacker League site. The projects included some of the most creative and innovative ideas you could imagine. We even saw an app that coders could use to find other coders based on the location of their commits on GitHub – all in real-time! How cool is that?

Grand Prize + Most Innovative Use of Esri Technology Award

SFPOPOS – This creative team took the overall win which included co-office space for further development of their ideas, $1000 in AWS (Amazon Web Service) credits, plus the Esri award for $2000 plus $250 in ArcGIS Online credits. Designers and web developers on the team created a simple but elegant website to explain what POPOS were and to showcase the application. The developers on the team actually implemented the ArcGIS GeoTriggers API with a real working iOS mobile application. The application automatically detected when you were within a certain proximity of a POPOS and the trigger would automatically send you a text message notification. You can learn more about the app here.

The Airbnb Innovation Award

Fraudio Tours – This team took home the Airbnb Award for $500. Their mobile web application used your geolocation to provide an audio walking tour of the area (like one you would expect in a museum). The difference was that the information is written and narrated by a comedian. What an interesting and entertaining way to discover what’s around you!

Esri and Twilio Service Credit Award

Rainbowsomewhere – This team won the Service Credit Award which included $250 of ArcGIS Online credits and $250 Twilio credits. The web application worked with local weather services to predict the location of rainbows. The application used your geolocation and an algorithm to calculate the potential locations in 10 minute intervals and displayed the information on a map.

Where did the data come from?

A huge collection of data made available for this event and the majority of teams took advantage of the extensive collection from the City of San Francisco’s DataSF Portal – https://data.sfgov.org/ and the ArcGIS Online organization. Most of their data was published as either ArcGIS Online maps or feature services, so developers could easily load these into their apps.

You can find a list of all of the data resources on the Hacker League site.

What about custom datasets and services?

In order to provide a way for participants to publish and access their own data, we also spun up an ArcGIS Online Hackathon Maps and Services organization. This included a ton of credits that participants could use to upload, host and even analyze their own data. And it didn’t take long for a number of teams to jump on board and spin up a few of their own custom geo services. Here is an interesting one that was created to show the location of Art and Cultural Facilities.

In the end…

Overall the hackathon was a huge success. Not only did it provide an opportunity for the community to demonstrate what apps and tools they thought would be most beneficial to discover the city, but it also gave the City of San Francisco and the participating organizations some great ideas of what they can do to help solve the problem too. Not to mention, there were some awesome prizes and awards given away!

From all of the Esri folks that were there, we really enjoyed working with all of the teams and organizations involved, and we look forward to seeing you again at the next one!
